Hytec Engineering Supplies Cylinder To Berg River Dam

Hytec
Engineering recently won a contract valued at
R1, 2-million for the supply of a large cylinder
for use in the Berg River Dam project.
The cylinder, which was supplied through Hytec
Johannesburg who also supplied the power packs,
will be used for the Berg River Dam emergency
gate closure intake tower. Water from the Berg
River Dam will be extracted through the 63m high
tower. The water extracted from the dam will
then be directed to Cape Town. While the
cylinder has not yet been installed or
commissioned, Hytec looks at this unique
delivery as a big achievement.
The Berg River
Dam is a concrete-faced rockfill dam about 900m
long and 60m high, with an embankment volume of
4-million m3 and a gross storage capacity of
130-million m3. It has side channel spillways,
40m long with a discharge chute, deflector
bucket and plunge pool with a maximum discharge
capacity of 740 cubic metres per second. The dam
also showcases two road bridges that include one
across the spillway and another providing access
to the intake tower. Situated in the Western
Cape, it hosts the 14-year-old Berg Water
Project.
