Tectra Automation Gives Rocky Horror Show a Lift

Tectra Automaton
has designed, manufactured, commissioned and
installed a custom stage lift for the Victory
Theatre’s Rocky Horror Show in just two weeks.
Tectra used BoschRexroth components including an
aluminium profile system, a servo motor and
braking system. The lift – with a 500kg carrying
capacity – allows actors to step on the lowered
platform 2m beneath the stage and rise up to
1.1m above the stage floor, with 3
pre-programmed level settings, controlled by a
chain-driven servo motor.
Instead of using a normal electric motor, Tectra
used a servo motor, which is said to be more
accurate with easier acceleration. Additionally,
the combination of duplex chain drives, bevel
helical gearbox and the servo motor ensures
stability and smooth running with minimal noise.
Tectra divisional Manager of Linear Motion and
Assembly Technology, Kevin Lombard says: “Safety
of the cast is ensured though the use of an
independent 650Nm braking system making sure
there is zero runback in the event of mechanical
or electrical failure.” An added safety feature
is the door locking mechanism, fitted with
isolator switches preventing the unit from being
operated independently. Tectra also provided
training with the theatre stage handler on the
lift operation.
The actors and theatre staff are satisfied with
the stage lift, Lombard says, and while it was
initially decided that the lift would be used 4
times during one performance, it was used 9
times for various scenes and applications.
